The Backstory
One evening, a few months after my seven-year relationship had just imploded, I had an urge to write about my chaotic attempt to recover from heartbreak. I sat down that night, fingertips pounding on the keyboard as nearly four thousand words fl ew onto the pages—everything from the heart-wrenching to the absurd to the inspiring…all about my quest to heal.
Initially, I intended to publish my story in a magazine. But when I shared it with friends and family, they asked me repeatedly, “What happens next?” I quickly realized there was more to write and more to tell—not quite the short essay I had imagined. Since I didn’t know the answer to their question, I kept writing as life unfolded. And then, nearly one year after the breakup, the story felt complete. Thus, my memoir, The Soulmate Strategy: My Imperfect Plan to Conquer Heartbreak and Find True Love, was born.
Shortly before the writing wrapped up, though, I had launched my podcast, Rock That Relationship!, with a friend of mine. Our goal was to talk about heartbreak and healing with anyone who would listen. So over the next two and a half years, while continuously editing the memoir, I processed all of my self-learning on the podcast—season after season. That entire journey led me to writing this book—my greatest-hits album of healing and thriving after heartbreak. So take what you want and leave what you don’t…but at least you have a place to start.
